Michael Tarulli: The Long Climb Back to Strength

29.Oct.25 | Physiotherapy

When you’ve spent your life serving others, it’s not easy to ask for help.

In 1993, while on duty with Victoria Police, Michael Tarulli was injured in a car accident that left him with incomplete paraplegia. His lower lumbar spine was partially damaged, affecting his movement and sensation from the waist down.

Fifteen years ago, Michael came to Physiosports Brighton looking for a way to stay active and regain control of his movement. That’s where he met Physiotherapist John Contreras — and together they set out to rebuild what injury had taken. Over more than a decade, the pair focused on gait training, strengthening, and functional independence. The result? Michael regained the ability to walk with an aid, manage daily activities, and return to the outdoor life he loved.

Through that process, John provided more than treatment — he built a platform for possibility. Michael started climbing again, first with guidance, then with purpose. His determination saw him represent Australia at the 2023 World Paraclimbing Championships in Bern, and he now regularly climbs in the Grampians and Blue Mountains.

Last year, his story caught national attention through a documentary, and this year, he’s taken it one step further — publishing his memoir ‘You Be Strong…’ my Mother said. It’s a raw, honest reflection on resilience, the power of community, and the belief that strength doesn’t just live in your muscles — it lives in your mindset.

We’re proud to have played a small part in Michael’s journey, and even prouder to see him share it with the world.
