Physio BikeFit Team

Our team of cycling physios have worked extensively within the industry including with; Inform Cycling, Cycling Australia, Saxo-Tinkoff, Lotto, Drapac Professional Cycling, Specialised Women’s Cycling - as well as triathletes from Bayside Triathlon Club, Tri-Response Group and ASF Tri. In addition, we educate other physiotherapists worldwide in cycling injury management – from Australia to Italy, Holland, Dubai, Scotland and France and more. We’re also cyclists ourselves, so we understand how important cycling is in your life, and what being off the bike, or not being able to hold your mate’s wheel, means to you.

Raymond Chan is a Physiotherapist and experienced Bike Rehab specialist and Bike Fitter, who works out of our Pursue Health clinic in Highett. Click here to book in with Ray at the Pursue Health clinic.

He has worked closely with the InForm Cycling team and professional cyclists as well as many community triathlon clubs including Bayside Tri club and TRG. He is also involved as a tutor in the Physio Bikefit Course. Ray is a Beach Road regular - usually riding approximately 200km a week with many obligatory coffee stops! As an age-group triathlete and you'll regularly see him challenging the podium in the Victorian 2XU triathlon series, and he competed in the World Age Group Championships in Gold Coast 2018. Through his experience in sports as well as sports coverage Ray has developed a special interest in sporting injury and rehabilitation of the endurance athlete, to improve performance and prevent injury and pain. As an avid cyclist himself, he understands the importance of a well-fitted bike position when it comes to comfort and power.

What is Physio BikeFit

Physio Bikefit is different to other bike fits.

To start, we use specialist cycling physiotherapists who are trained not only in bike fit but cycling injury prevention and the latest cycling science. which they bring to your bike fit.

We then take a detailed analysis of your bike and current set-up, we assess your body including taking measurements, understanding your injury history, looking at flexibility and your biomechanics; armed with this information we then evaluate how you personally interact with the bike – including using leading video assessment technology.

By taking this highly individualised approach, Physio Bikefit delivers the results you want, whether that’s increased comfort on the bike, managing injuries, improving performance, or just feeling great when riding. We can even help you choose the right bike, or bike set-up and provide you with an exercise program to address any areas of injury concern.

A Physio BikeFit includes

  1. A detailed assessment a specialist cycling physiotherapist.
  2. A detailed history of your pain, injury, training load and bike set-up/s.
  3. Assessment and measures of your body; including leg length, forearm length, strength, flexibility, co-ordination and movement control.
  4. Specific measures of not just your bike – but you on the bike and how you interact with the bike.
  5. A detailed video assessment of you pedalling and your body position.
  6. Assessment of your cleat position.
  7. Following your Physio Bikefit we provide you a detailed Physio Bikefit Report. We can also provide this and any recommendations to your bike shop, treating practitioner or coach where requested.
  8. Your report will include a tailored plan aimed at meeting your specific cycling goals, from both a body and a bike perspective – more than just changing your saddle position.
Rebates are available for your Physio BikeFit through your private health insurance extras cover.

Physio BikeFit – The Science

At the heart of Physio Bikefit is a thorough understanding of the latest cycling and biomechanical science. To learn more about the science behind Physio Bikefit, visit our Science of Cycling site, where you’ll find published articles, blog posts, podcasts and more.

Unique to a Physio Bikefit is the depth of cycling and sports-based physiotherapy science we incorporate into your assessment.

Our fitters are not only passionate cyclists, but each has years of experience working in cycling and sports-based physiotherapy, including with pro-teams and lecturing internationally. They have accredited qualifications through ‘Science of Cycling – Physio Bikefit’ and some have the highest level of accreditation (Level 4) with the International Bike Fitting Institute

Following is some of the science we have considered with your assessment.

Knee Angle

Research has found a correct knee angle (between 33 and 43 degrees) increases power output and reduces the risk of an overuse injury.

At Physio Bikefit, we measure your knee angle via 2D video, when the foot is at its lowest point i.e. bottom dead centre. We then adjust your bike and/or technique to work within this range.

Lumbar Spine Position

Over flexing through the lumbar (lower) spine is known to be a significant factor in cycling-based back pain.

Controlling both the lumbar spine and the pelvis are key to reducing pain on the bike; and fundamental to improving force transfer efficiency. A core component of your Physio Bikefit will be recommendations on how to improve the relationship between your back, pelvis and hips.

Ankle Angle

The ankle-foot relationship plays a very important role in pedalling. Maintaining a stiff ‘lever’ at the foot and ankle is essential for efficient transfer of power to the pedal.

Whilst we work within your personal technique, research has shown the ideal ankle angle is with the toe pointed slightly down, and that most of your force is through the ball of the foot to the pedal.

Rehab / Strength and Conditioning

Cycling specific strength and conditioning programs are evidenced to improve performance and comfort on the bike and can benefit cyclists at every level.

Specifically, poor activation and alignment are often correlated with knee and back pain, and of course reduced power output. A targeted program will address specific issues and/or weaknesses within your body, and aid overall performance.

Technique

Modification of technique can be an important factor in how efficiently you pedal.

You may know a smooth circular pedal motion is most effective, however this is not enough alone. Lower back position and pelvis control, as well as minimising knee movement, are verified factors to improve technique, improve muscle activation and thereby increase ride efficiency and output.

Load Management

Clinical research into the risk factors associated with sport related pain and injury consistently support the importance of managing load to avoid injury. We consider the relationship between your training history, your current training and training intensity (‘training stress balance’) as part of your Physio Bikefit.

A good load management program will help you predict and pro-actively manage injury and fatigue, help you ride better and avoid unwanted periods off the bike.

Frequently asked questions

Why a Physio Bikefit and not ReTul or Specialised?

ReTul and Specialised BG Fit are forms of motion capture technology of which there are many. They measure your angles only, and not very accurately. The most important component is an experienced bikefitter to interpret these numbers in association with your body’s ability, your bike measures, and your problem!

What should I bring?

Bring your bike, cycling shoes and shorts/knicks. The assessment is done with no top on (crop top for females) and a few texta marks. We will change over your rear skewer if required or you can bring your own for attachment to a MagTrainer.

How long will it take?

Your appointment is for 1 hour, with reports emailed to you within 24 hours.

What will occur during the session?

We will initially talk about any soreness, injury or concerns, as well as your cycling history, training and your bike. We will then assess and measure your body and your bike, and video you on the bike under various conditions. We will then analyse the findings and together plan for bike changes, exercises, treatment or cycling technique correction as required to optimise your cycling performance and experience.
