For a lot of athletes and physically active people maintaining health and staying injury free can become a constant battle. For the female athlete a factor that could be contributing to this is the Female Athlete Triad
The Female Athlete Triad is described as the interrelationship between energy availability, menstrual function and bone mineral density. On one end of the spectrum an athlete has appropriate nutrition and the three components promote robust health in female athletes. At the other end, clinical consequences of the Triad include eating disorders, loss of menstrual cycle, osteoporosis and stress fractures, all of which can impact significantly on the health of a female athlete.
Here is an interesting blog on someone’s personal experience with the Female Athlete Triad.
