At the heart of Physio Bikefit is a thorough understanding of the latest cycling and biomechanical science. To learn more about the science behind Physio Bikefit, visit our Science of Cycling site, where you’ll find published articles, blog posts, podcasts and more.

Unique to a Physio Bikefit is the depth of cycling and sports-based physiotherapy science we incorporate into your assessment.
Our fitters are not only passionate cyclists, but each has years of experience working in cycling and sports-based physiotherapy, including with pro-teams and lecturing internationally. They have accredited qualifications through ‘Science of Cycling – Physio Bikefit’ and some have the highest level of accreditation (Level 4) with the International Bike Fitting Institute
Following is some of the science we have considered with your assessment.
Research has found a correct knee angle (between 33 and 43 degrees) increases power output and reduces the risk of an overuse injury.
At Physio Bikefit, we measure your knee angle via 2D video, when the foot is at its lowest point i.e. bottom dead centre. We then adjust your bike and/or technique to work within this range.
Over flexing through the lumbar (lower) spine is known to be a significant factor in cycling-based back pain.
Controlling both the lumbar spine and the pelvis are key to reducing pain on the bike; and fundamental to improving force transfer efficiency. A core component of your Physio Bikefit will be recommendations on how to improve the relationship between your back, pelvis and hips.
The ankle-foot relationship plays a very important role in pedalling. Maintaining a stiff ‘lever’ at the foot and ankle is essential for efficient transfer of power to the pedal.
Whilst we work within your personal technique, research has shown the ideal ankle angle is with the toe pointed slightly down, and that most of your force is through the ball of the foot to the pedal.
Cycling specific strength and conditioning programs are evidenced to improve performance and comfort on the bike and can benefit cyclists at every level.
Specifically, poor activation and alignment are often correlated with knee and back pain, and of course reduced power output. A targeted program will address specific issues and/or weaknesses within your body, and aid overall performance.
Modification of technique can be an important factor in how efficiently you pedal.
You may know a smooth circular pedal motion is most effective, however this is not enough alone. Lower back position and pelvis control, as well as minimising knee movement, are verified factors to improve technique, improve muscle activation and thereby increase ride efficiency and output.
Clinical research into the risk factors associated with sport related pain and injury consistently support the importance of managing load to avoid injury. We consider the relationship between your training history, your current training and training intensity (‘training stress balance’) as part of your Physio Bikefit.
A good load management program will help you predict and pro-actively manage injury and fatigue, help you ride better and avoid unwanted periods off the bike.

ReTul and Specialised BG Fit are forms of motion capture technology of which there are many. They measure your angles only. The most important component to a good Bikefit is having an experienced bikefitter to interpret these numbers, and how they work in association with your body’s ability, your bike measures, and your goal or problem!
Your appointment is for 90 minutes, with reports emailed to you within 24 hours.
Bring your bike, cycling shoes and shorts/knicks. The assessment is often done undertaken with no top on (crop top for females) and a few texta marks. Currently we use a Wahoo Kickr for Disc (thru-axle) or caliper brake. Most Road, Gravel and MTBs are able to be accommodated but let us know if you feel your bike is unique/might have a problem mounting to a Kickr. We have a few other options.
We will initially talk about any soreness, injury or concerns, as well as your cycling history, training and your bike. We will then assess and measure your body and your bike, and video you on the bike under various conditions. We will then analyse the findings and together plan for bike changes, exercises, treatment or cycling technique correction as required to optimise your cycling performance and experience.
Will you sell me anything?
Will you fit new cleats to my shoes; change over my stem; change my pedals?
